Okay, after a smoothe install of Vista on my notebook, everything seemed fine. Aero glass was working nicely but everytime I wanted to play a game, it would just stop working. Installing ATi's new BETA driver also did not resolve the problem. Weeks later and I have a working solution. This probably will only work for a few people experiencing the same problems and symptoms. Symptoms to look for are: 1: No 3D apps/games work. (fullscreen) 2: You can't change your resolution. (eg. 1280x800) 3: You can't change your monitor refresh rate.
My machine is an ACER 4101WLMi with ATi x700. Being ACER, I changed my monitor driver from Generic PNP to ACER Aspire 77s. This gave me access to other resolutions and all the games worked fine from there on. It seems as though Vista can't get the desired display mode the software is set up for and as a result, stops working. Anyway, hope it's useful to you.
